We’re For Bumble Bees
March 6, 2009 by admin
Filed under Featured, Spreading the Word
You may remember last spring when Charlie found this strange buzzy, fluffy thing.
Well, over the winter we have been doing our research and it turns out that these are Bumble Bees and are very important for our garden.
Mum says that Bumble Bees are endangered which means they are dying out and may soon be gone from the gardens for ever. This made us very sad and we decided to see what we could do.
There is a very kind organisation called the Bumble Bee Conseravation Trust and they have a wonderful website telling us all about the different types of Bumble Bee and what we can do to help them. They even have one of us…Toby the Springer Spaniel is a Bumble Bee sniffer dog!
They have a list of garden flowers that the Bees need from spring to Summer so we checked it and are pleased that my mum has nearly all of these plants in our garden.
Bumble Bees can’t travel as far as we can walk and they need food within 1.5Km of their home, so we have asked mum and dad if we can put some Bumble Bee Houses in the garden. Mum is going to make some…we will let you know how she gets on.
We saw a programme about Charles Darwin last night which showed us how horrible field mice had wrecked the Bumble Bee Homes, so we are going to make sure mummy catches all the mice in the garden, but I think she does this anyway because they eat all her seedlings.
We are going to keep a close eye on our Bees this year and we will keep you updated.
Buster.

New video – Dogs for the Disabled – Assistance Dogs
January 15, 2009 by admin
Our latest video from the web features a charity called Dogs for the Disabled.
They train specially selected dogs to carry out a range of practical tasks to assist disabled children and adults in order to achieve greater independence and are the only assistance dog charity to train dogs specially for disabled children.
Since 1988 the charity has trained over 350 partnerships.
Every dog is trained to help with simple everyday tasks such as opening doors, picking up the morning post, emptying the washing machine, even retrieving dropped items such as a TV remote, keys or a wallet.
Puppy Sponsorship
Sponsor a puppy and you’ll be helping Dogs for the Disabled to change lives. Just like any pup, our young labradors and golden retrievers are soft and cuddly, but they’re also inquisitive, cheeky and full of mischief.
As a Puppy Sponsor, you can help Dogs for the Disabled give your pup and others just like them, all the love and support they’ll need before they start training to become an assistance dog. You’ll receive a Welcome Pack with puppy pictures, as well as regular updates about your pup’s progress.
Volunteering Opportunities with Dogs
Everyone loves a puppy, but imagine being able to offer one a home for a year, giving it all the experiences to start off on the road to becoming an assistance dog. Unlike pet dogs, pups in training go to all sorts of different places such as shopping centres, supermarkets, the local school, train stations or even the hairdressers.
By introducing a puppy to all these different environments at an early age our pups become confident and used to the many different sights, smells and sounds they will encounter as a working dog.
No experience is necessary, however Puppy Socialisers are required to meet a few simple criteria.

Warning – Parasite moving north
August 15, 2008 by admin
Two posts in one day, but we thought this was important.
According to BBC News a parasite which can cause fatal illness in dogs has been found in Scotland for the first time, scientists have confirmed.
Experts said that the parasite Angiostrongylus vasorum, also known as the ‘French heartworm’, could be moving north because of climate change.
It is carried by slugs and snails which have increased in number in Scotland because of recent warm temperatures.
Vets in Glasgow recently treated a Weimaraner which had the parasite.
Signs that a dog is infected by the parasite include coughing, breathing difficulties and unexplained bleeding problems, including spontaneous bruising and bleeding into the eye.
