Sadly, I have to report that my best buddy Charlie died on Monday, only 3 weeks before his twelfth birthday. He suffered a relapse of Immune Mediated Thrombocytopenia.
My mum will go into this in more detail in another post because it is important that dog owners are made aware of this deadly condition where the body’s immune system starts to attack its own blood platelets.
There are some veterinarians and pet owners who think that Thrombocytopenia may be linked to canine vaccination and we think this is what happened to Charlie.
His first run in with IMT started in April last year and we do not know the initial cause. He was immediately treated with some heavy duty medication and whilst it was a struggle for him, he managed to pull through.
His meds were gradually reduced until he was declared ‘in remission’ a few months later. However, two weeks after his vaccinations this year, he relapsed and just didn’t have the strength to make it this time.
So, I want to say a big thank you to all of his friends. He had a wonderful life with lots of adventures.
