A $500 rug has been removed from a Florida sheriff’s office after an observant offical spotted it mistakenly read “in dog we trust”.
It had laid on the floor in the lobby of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Administration Building located in Largo for a couple of months.
“In God We Trust” was adopted as the official motto of the United States in 1956. It has also the motto of the State of Florida.
The phrase has also appeared on all gold coins and silver dollar coins, half-dollar coins, and quarter-dollar coins struck in the USA since July 1, 1908.
The Sheriff’s Office has placed the entrance mat up for auction and will donate 100% of the proceeds to Canine Estates Incorporated, a local animal rescue organisation.
The typographical error was made by the rug’s manufacturer.
Bidding currently stands at more than $5000.
The on-line auction closes on Wednesday 21 January, 2015.
